Power Washing Your Home: How Often? Your home can really take a beating from the elements. Month after month year after year the outside of your house has to withstand sun, rain, wind, hail and snow. Just like your mailman, whether rain or shine your home doesn't get a day off. It can really take a toll on the exterior of your home. It won't take long before it can begin to look dirty, grimy and even moldy.
The best protection is a good power washing that can make even an older house look fresh and new. For those that have never had their home power washed before you may have a few questions... What are the benefits of power washing your home? Power washing blasts accumulated dirt, grime and mold off of the exterior of your home. Power washing uses a strong stream of water to do all the work for you, eliminating the need to climb a ladder and scrub, scrub, scrub, (fun for no one.) How often should I power wash my home? How often you power wash your home is going to depend on the climate and environment where you live. If you live in a more humid environment, the exterior of your home could be more vulnerable to mold and mildew accumulation. You might live in a place that gets heavy storms, and those could bring with them more wind, dirt and leaves. Living in a place with lots of leafy trees could also mean you need more frequent power washings. Homes in Washington DC are susceptible to all the elements. It is best to really keep an eye on your home and maintenance is key. When cleaning is not enough is it time to replace your siding? There are times your home might need a little more than a good power washing; you may need to replace your siding altogether. If your house's siding has any signs of physical damage such as being cracked or broken. You might need to consider getting them replaced. It may also be the case if your home’s siding is showing signs of heavy mold or dry rot. The sun can also have very strong effect on your siding. With faded siding there is no amount of power washing that can fix that. "Glitzy is out and comfy is in as Americans take a simpler approach to home renovation."- Wendy Koch,USA Today
With real estate values slowly rising from stagnation homeowners are also taking it slow by staying put and making their investment homes, HOME. They are taking on small remodels to improve livability. Home remodeling has been picking up since 2012 and posting strong growth. A lot of the rebuilds driving the market are midsize kitchens, bath projects, maintenance work like waterproofing and reconditioning flat roofs, and energy-efficiency upgrades. In fact, unlike a few years ago, Americans are now spending more on remodeling than on new construction, says Stephen Melman of the National Association of Home Builders. He says they're moving less now than at any time since World War II, so they're thinking less about the resale value of a remodel. "They do it, because they want to. That's a major change in the psychology," he says. Yet with home equity loans in short supply, many Americans are paying cash for renovations, so their projects tend to be smaller and focused. "The trend we keep seeing is a move from formal to informal living," says Jerry Levine, president of the Washington, D.C.-area remodeling firm Levine Group Architects & Builders. He says his high-end clientele, who spend an average of $240,000 on renovations, want spaces to be comfortable, not fancy. Take Sherry Hiemstra, for example. When she remodeled a 2002 duplex in the nation's capital, she shrank the luxury kitchen (it took over half the first floor) and added windows to the dining area to bring in more light and views of the holly-rimmed patio walkway. "We wanted something that was very comfortable and met our lifestyle," she says. The single biggest overall trend is homeowners craving to be connected to the outdoors, via larger windows, decks or porches. Americans are going back to the future as they try to create permanent, family homes that reflect who they are.
