What Is Your Roof Trying To Tell You?

Picture
Many homeowners rarely think about the roof over their heads until there is a problem. Years pass quickly leaving many of us forgetting how old our roofs may actually really be. Roofs can fail due to age and damage, keeping an eye on the state of your roof will help you avoid potential costly damage to the rest of your home.

Start Inside
Don’t wait until it is raining inside of your home to realize your roof is in poor shape, there are ways you can check on its status prior to there being an emergency. The first place to assess your roofs health isn’t actually on its exterior, your attic can actually give you many clues to the state of your roof.

Grab a flashlight and head up to your attic, notice if any sunlight is peeking through the beams or any part of the roof. Sunlight and signs of water stains can tell you exactly where the troubled spots lie, and help you identify if repair or replacement may be needed.

Be Aware Of Your Roof’s History
It is also a good idea to keep your records of your roofs lifetime handy so that you can easily determine when it was initially built or replaced and any repairs that have been made over the years. Having an up to date understanding of your roofs timeline can help you ward off any problems before they even appear.

Understand What Your Roof Is Made Of
Knowing what your roof is made of is also important in determining its current condition. For example, traditional asphalt shingled roofs can last 20 to 25 years before needing to be replaced, given that there may be shingles replaced throughout its lifetime if needed. If a roof was laid over existing shingles, it will need to be replaced in about 20 years.

Always Check Your Roof After Storms
Checking on your roof after big storms, high winds, and soaking rains will ensure that you are able to assess any possible damaged or loose materials and address the situation quickly. Look for broken or missing shingles, cracked materials, and any visible discolorations to determine extent of damage and what needs to be repaired.

The Problem With Fungus
If  you see fungus and molds growing in the cracks of your roofing materials or along the shingles, you may be in for bigger issues than just cleaning up a mess. Water soaked materials are hotbeds for fungus and molds that thrive in damp places. Fungus growth can mean you have an area that does not dry out properly after it rains, which can also mean further water damage to your roofing structure may have occurred.

Call The Professionals
If you check your roofs health regularly, you are most likely going to locate and repair any troubled areas before they become more extensive problems. You will also be able to schedule construction of your roofs replacement when it has become old and potentially compromised. When you are in need of a new roof, contact Boyd Construction Co Inc. for licensed and bonded experienced roofing construction.
