Safely Inspect Your roof after a storm

Picture
This hurricane season has certainly been historic in its intensity as well as its damage. Luckily the greater Washington DC area did not see as significant an impact, however, it’s not just homes in the storm tracks that may need a roofer’s attention. Strong winds and debris have been taking a significant toll on roofs all along the East Coast and Washington DC rooftops. Home and property owners should be arranging for post-storm inspections now, so roofing contractors like The Boyd Construction Co Inc, can provide any necessary repairs before the challenges of winter set in.

Here are a few tips provided by The Boyd Construction Co Inc, the premier roofing specialists in the greater Washington DC area, as you assess any hurricane season-related damage.

Inside: Begin in the attic, if it’s accessible, during the daytime:

  • The first and most telltale sign of a problem would be sunlight showing through the plywood decking, which may indicate serious holes in need of repair.
  • If there are no obvious holes, use a flashlight to inspect the decking for dark stains or streaks, as well as sagging, all of which could be caused by moisture.

Outside: You may be able to see most, if not all, of your roof from ground level. Walk around your house, examining the roof for these signs of damage:

  • Missing shingles should be replaced as quickly as possible.
  • Cracked or curled shingles are sometimes caused by high winds or flying debris.
  • Dark patches where the granules have come off of the shingle. In addition to affecting the overall look of the roof, bare patches like these leave the shingles vulnerable to the sun, which can, over time, dry out the asphalt, and may lead to leaks.
  • Bent or detached flashing. Flashing helps keep water from chimneys, vents, and other roof penetrations and should be thoroughly sealed to prevent water intrusion.
  • Debris. A branch on the roof may not seem like a big deal, but over time, it can rub the granules loose from your shingles, or may even be covering a crack that it caused as it landed.

Up the ladder: If you are comfortable climbing a ladder and the weather conditions allow you to do so safely, you can get a better look at your roof up close. Look for:
  • Loose nails or nail heads raised above the shingle surface may be just one storm away from letting go entirely.
  • Gutter debris can contribute to ice dams later in the year. Your roofing contractor may provide gutter cleaning services if you are not comfortable doing the job yourself.
  • Flashing on the up-slope (or back) of the chimney and penetrations can be seen more easily from the roof itself.

If you find damage: Call a local, Washington DC area, reputable roofing contractor, like The Boyd Construction Co Inc, right away. The sooner you address any hurricane-season damage, the more secure your roof will be for the winter months.

Lower your electric bill with an energy efficient roof

Picture
As a home owner in the greater Washington DC area you have certainly tried more ways than one to save on your energy costs. And if your like most homeowners you find yourself still wondering why bills are still soaring way beyond your budget. Many homeowners in the Washington DC area do not realize that it could, in fact, be their roof that is causing the unnecessary energy expenditure.

Approximately 25% of heat loss during winter and heat gained during summer months pass through the house covering. The heat transfer, working to maintain the surrounding’s temperature levels, works up your home’s heating and cooling systems. Imagine the energy that is wasted to keep you comfortable, and the unfortunate impact it has at on your bill! What is the solution? Our Washington DC roofing specialist at Boyd Construction Co Inc, discuss three great ways to make your roof energy efficient.

HERE ARE THREE WAYS TO ACHIEVE ENERGY EFFICIENT WASHINGTON DC ROOFING

Opt for Contemporary Materials

When it’s time to replace your Washington DC roof, one of the most important considerations is energy efficiency. Washington DC roofing innovations have factored in maintenance and energy costs in the creation and installation of state-of-the-art materials. Metal panels are ideally put in place for exhibiting high energy efficiency and resistance to environmental elements like wind and rain. Metal roofs effectively reflect sunlight before it could heat up the house.

Apply Cool Roof Coating

Ripping up shingles and installing brand new roofing material would not be practical if your roof is not really in need of a replacement. Adding cool roof coating can turn your roof into an energy-efficient covering. The coating is a very thick paint comprised of reflective pigments designed to reflect sunlight instead of absorbing the heat, and may also protect from UV light damage. As its name suggests, your roof maintains a cooler, lower temperature and so does your home underneath. Once applied, the average standard roof temperature of 150 degrees Fahrenheit drops down to about 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

Add Insulation In The Attic

Energy efficiency can be significantly improved by simply adding attic insulation. Like roofs, insulation options arrive in many types, such as blown-in, spray or foam. Leave installation to the pros to ensure you gain utmost cooling and heating benefits and energy savings. Insulating your home offers protection throughout the seasons as it helps regulate temperature within your surroundings. Insulation keeps heat inside during cold winter days, while preventing cool air from escaping on hot summer days.

4 Things you need to know about siding replacement

Picture
Purchasing new siding is a major decision for any homeowner or business owner. You want the siding you choose to be a great long-term fit for the property. Making the right decisions about when to invest in a siding replacement and the best material and color for your job ensures you’ll be satisfied with your new siding for years to come. Boyd Construction Co Inc, of Washington DC, offers 4 tips to making the right decision when it comes to replacing your siding.

Determine Time for a Siding Replacement

Inspect your siding for warping, which indicates it must be replaced. Keep an eye out for mold and mildew growth as well, which don’t always point to failing siding but may reveal other issues with the building. Dry rot is another common problem with wood siding. You may be able to replace dry rot-damaged sections, but most Washington DC roofing contractors recommend a full siding replacement.

Understand Benefits of Siding Replacement

Siding isn’t cheap, which means many homeowners and business owners put off investing in it for as long as possible. New siding isn’t the most exciting purchase, but it comes with a wealth of advantages. Fresh, clean siding improves a building’s curb appeal instantly. It also makes a structure easier to clean and maintain, saving you money down the road.

Select Material

As you weigh varying siding materials, consider your budget and the amount of upkeep you want to put into the siding. The given climate and the types of siding common to your area will also factor into your final decision. The siding should be well suited to the climate and should fit in with the surrounding properties. While your siding doesn’t need to match other properties exactly, you don’t want to select siding that will lower the value of the home.

Select Color

You want to select a siding color that fits with the existing theme of the building without being overly matching. If you’ll be making other exterior upgrades in the near future, make sure the siding fits with these plans. Lighter colors are preferable for hot climates, as they won’t absorb as much heat as darker colors. Think about a color that fits well within your neighborhood, too.
