Waterproofing Your Chimney

Picture

The longevity of your chimney depends mostly on its resistance to water penetration into the brick and mortar. Water can cause deterioration, corrosion, efflorescence, and eventually result in structural failure if left unchecked.

Severe erosion and deterioration is caused by water penetration. Bricks will begin to crumble as the water damage becomes for severe. This is extremely dangerous and can lead to expensive structural damage.

Efflorescence looks like white spots on brick, this indicates that water penetration and leaching salts are present. This is the beginning signs of a very serious moisture problem.

Water also causes damage during the freeze/thaw cycles chimneys in the Washington DC area experience, leading to structural failure and spalling. Spalling is when the face of the brick begins to separate and may even fall off. If you notice pieces of brick laying at the bottom of your chimney, it’s time to call Boyd Construction Co for chimney waterproofing services to prevent further damage.

Upon a close inspection, a contractor from Boyd Construction Co can spot hairline cracks and openings in mortar that need to be repaired and treated.

The white stains common on many chimneys indicate that efflorescence is at work. If you notice white stains developing on your chimney, you already have a moisture problem. It’s best to address this situation before it becomes an expensive repair requirement. Be careful when washing the chimney wall with strong acids, as they can weaken mortar and make the wall more porous and susceptible to further water damage. Also, avoid sandblasting your chimney walls, as this can increase cracks and gaps and weakens the ability of the masonry to keep out water.

The other way moisture gets into your chimney is from the inside out. The gases that escape out your flue contain water vapor and some of that moisture will work its way through any breaches in the liner and into your masonry chimney walls.

The durability and longevity of your masonry chimney depend mostly on its resistance to water penetration into the brick and mortar. Water can cause deterioration, corrosion, efflorescence, spalling and ultimately result in structural failure if left unchecked. We offer chimney water repellent treatment solutions that can help increase the life of your chimney and prevent unnecessary structural damage.
